Sogo Active

CANADA’S YOUTH ARE GETTING ACTIVE!

Sogo Active is a national youth engagement movement for physical activity. It is designed to increase levels of physical activity among Canadians age 13 to 19 by drawing on the power of young people to reach out to their less active peers, to develop their leadership skills, and to break down the barriers to active living that many young people encounter.

Sogo Active puts power in the hands of youth to take charge of their own lives, and to inspire their peers to get moving. It’s a national network that connects youth with their peers and with community organizations. Through (www.sogoactive.com) youth can set activity goals, share challenges, celebrate successes, and use their own ideas to become the most active young people on earth. For youth who join the movement, Coca-Cola Canada is providing once-in-a-lifetime experiences, starting with the opportunity to carry the Olympic Flame in their own home town. Youth who join Sogo Active from November 2008 to June 2009 become eligible to be selected by Coca-Cola Canada as one of over 1,000 torchbearers in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.

Sogo Active is powered by ParticipACTION and sponsored by Coca-Cola Canada. It is delivered in the community by a network of partners at the provincial/territorial and local levels, and RPAY is very proud to be the territorial coordinator and support this program in the Yukon.

It’s been called the sickest way to love healthy. Be part of the Team.

Be Part of the Team – Here’s How Community Organizations can help
Join the movement at www.sogoactive.com and support youth in accessing equipment, facilities and resources. We need people who can reach out to teens, tell them about Sogo Active and connect youth to sogo groups they’ll love. By joining the sogo team, you’ll help to nurture stronger, healthier young Canadians who will become passionate leaders of tomorrow – leaders that build active communities. Register and connect with youth in your community. Community organizations may be found in any or all of the following sectors: recreation, active transportation, youth engagement, sport participation, active living, public health, groups working with youth with disabilities, groups working with disadvantaged youth, faith organizations, multicultural groups and other sectors that support physical activity such as outdoor recreation and dance.

Why Join?
It’s free for community organizations to take part in and you can make new connections with youth. Community hosts who register can also help youth groups access community micro-grants for their youth-led activities. Funding applications can be submitted online and RPAY will review and administer funding to eligible groups.

Some possible examples of group activities include: open basketball after school on Tuesdays, youth work with community to build a skateboard park and engage young people in participating there, or offer a series of “fun zone days” where others can try a new active or sport.
